California Tribal Leaders Praise Designation of National Marine Sanctuary

Tribal leaders in California thanked the Biden administration on Monday for the designation of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.

Tribal leaders also urged President Biden to continue adding to his significant conservation legacy by designating three new national monuments in California before the end of his term.

Local leaders and California lawmakers want the president to use the Antiquities Act to make the Sáttítla, Chuckwalla, and Kw’tsán lands into national monuments.

State officials and tribal leaders are calling on President Biden to designate three new national monuments in California. State Sen. Ben Allen said at a news conference Wednesday that it would provide permanent protections for Indigenous communities and take significant steps toward conservation, aligned with California’s “30×30” goal.
