WATCH: Tribal Leaders, Elected Officials, and Local Community Members Call on President Biden to Designate Chuckwalla National Monument
By Protect Chuckwalla National Monument
On September 25th, the Protect California Deserts coalition organized a press conference. Elected officials, Tribal members, community leaders, and local residents joined Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz (CA-25) in calling on President Biden to designate the Chuckwalla National Monument and protect lands adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park. Congressman Ruiz has introduced legislation to achieve this goal and the proposed national monument and park expansion would help ensure equitable access to nature for local residents, honor and recognize tribal homelands, and protect fragile desert wildlife and crucial habitat.
Attendees asked President Biden to expand the monument and protect lands adjacent to the national park via the Antiquities Act. The Antiquities Act is a 1906 law that grants U.S. Presidents the ability to designate federal public lands, waters, and cultural and historical sites as national monuments with a Presidential Proclamation.
